Additional Information
Periodontal (gum) diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth.Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. It begins when the bacteria in plaque (the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth) causes the gums to become inflamed. The most common form of gum disease is gingivitis. It is distinguished from the more severe type, periodontitis, by the depth of gum pockets and bone loss.
Our practice philosophy involves a commitment to the establishment and maintenance of healthy mouths, and a preventive approach to the control of all forms of oral problems. Regular hygiene and examination appointments are integral to the achievement of these goals.
During a hygiene appointment our dental hygienists will thoroughly remove any plaque, calculus (hardened plaque or ‘tartar’), and surface staining from your teeth. Your gums will be checked for gingivitis or periodontitis (gum disease), and your mouth checked for signs of other diseases such as oral cancer.
Your dental hygienist will also work with you to show you how to most effectively clean your teeth, and will give you advice on which dental products to use to make your job easier and more effective. They may also recommend some diet or lifestyle changes to help maintain good oral health.
Are you in desperate need of dental care, but too afraid to go to the dentist. Are you facing extensive treatment which you cannot face without being "out" You are not alone. We understand that for far too many people fear and anxiety complicate essential dental treatment. For our patients who need that extra help to relax, we offer Sedation Dentistry.
Conscious sedation is a technique in which a sedative medication (similar to Valium) is injected into a vein in the arm, to help relax a patient that is anxious. The medication leaves people fully alert and able to respond to questions. (That's why the process is called conscious sedation.)
It is a good technique for patients that have mild to moderate anxiety or fear of dental procedures. This technique is also advisable for adult patients undergoing surgical extraction or who require a great deal of dental treatment and wish to have more treatment completed in fewer visits. Our experienced team will make you completely comfortable, and will monitor you closely while you are under sedation. Patients treated with conscious sedation usually have little to no memory of the dental procedure being performed.
Product and Services
If you have missing teeth, we can create a permanent 'bridge' appliance to replace the missing teeth. Not only does a bridge fill the missing space, thereby giving you back a complete smile, it will also prevent the teeth on either side of the space from shifting. It also stops the tooth that chews with it from drifting into the space.
Dental bridges are a long lasting treatment (10-15 years) for people with single or multiple (adjacent) tooth loss. Missing teeth can dramatically affect a person's appearance and also cause speech impediments thus affecting their self-esteem.

A ‘fixed’ bridge is permanently joined onto the neighboring teeth on either side of the gap, and consists of three basic units: the false tooth or teeth and two crowns. If healthy adjacent 'anchor' teeth aren't available, a surgically implanted metal post or dental 'implant' may be an alternate choice.
Root canals are needed when a dental infection, or tooth decay, reaches the nerve (pulp chamber) of the tooth. The infection destroys the nerves located within the root of the tooth, eventually causing the tooth to die. Years ago, the only option for this type of dental problem was a tooth extraction. Now, thanks to dental technology, our dentists can prolong the life of your tooth!
It’s understandable you’d be concerned about the possibility of having a root canal procedure.Over the years, root canals have become synonymous with serious pain; but they’ve actually come a long way. This is a simple, safe, and effective way to enhance your smile.
It does not harm the teeth or gums. It simply removes all the stains from your teeth so that they are as white as they naturally are. Bleaching your teeth can be done as a single visit whitening (one appointment) or as a take home method with custom made trays (this method takes about a week). At City Dentists we only use the take home method as it is more predictable than the single visit technique which produces a less long-term shade change; largely due to initial dehydration of the enamel.
Dental amalgam is a safe and durable material that has been used by dentists to restore teeth for well over 100 years. It is an alloy or combination of two or more metals including silver, copper and tin to which mercury is added. It is mixed and packed into the tooth cavity. Amalgam fillings are held in place by the shape of the pre-drilled cavity. It is extremely durable and able to withstand the grinding and chewing of your back teeth over long periods of time.
The New Zealand Dental Association (NZDA) affirms the safety of dental amalgam as a restorative material. Patients are assured that the current extensive scientific evidence shows amalgam fillings, whether old or new, do not constitute a threat to their health. Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated that there is no evidence of any association linking amalgam fillings with chronic degenerative diseases, kidney disease, autoimmune disease, cognitive function, adverse pregnancy outcomes, or any non-specific symptoms.
